Short history of Death Metal |
||
| The history of the best death metal bands:
POSSESSED: The band has been created in '83 by M.Torrao and M.Sus, for some time jamming in the garage and then J.Becerra joined the band recruited by the first two. Along with B.Montana they started to play some gigs in the S.F. Bay Area wit their friends from Exodus and have been very well received by fans. In '84 they recorded a four-song demo and sent to some music companies, found by B.Slagel from MetalBlade, they have been proposed to release one track on the next Metal Massacre Compilation and meanwhile they fired Montana(didnt agree on the satanic image) and recruited a talented young guitarist L.Lalonde. After the compilation was released MetalBlade didnt even propose them any record, but Combat came and that's how they recorded(in the eastern break) the milestone in death metal: "Seven Churches" in '85. The album is terrifying, so terrifying, even unbelieveble for those times, the first death metal record that has ever come, terrorizing vocals, raw till the last blood guitars with twisted riffing and fast drumming with legs being "all over the place". They started their first big tour around Europe and States, without resting they entered the studio in the middle of '86 and released their second LP: "Beyond the gates". Production is unfortunatly alot poorer, but the songwriting a class higher, the technic improvement in playing the instruments is huge as well as the composition of the music. This was quite a turning point as they obviously changed to trash metal and left death metal behind. More touring followed(very well received in Europe), and in the beginning of '87 coming back from the old continent to the States for more killing on the stage! At the end of '87 they released their last record, the EP called "The eyes of horror", alot of changes here. Production the same, the lyrics are no more about satanism, they started to express other topics and the songwiting is maybe the most professional and ambitious than ever before. Very soon after releasing this EP 3 of the band members (all exept Torrao) decided to leave the band. Torrao continued to write material and looking for a new line-up which after few changes established in '91, in '92 they released a demo and in '93 giged a bit here and there. All these efforts failed and the band has disbanded soon after. Nevertheless Possesed was, is and will always be the most influential death metal band in the history. |

DEATH: Death started in '83 when C.Shuldiner with his friends K.Lee and R.Rozz started to play in a garage, they decided to form a band then and called it Mantas, in the same year they recorded their first demo: "Death by metal". In '84 the guyz changed the name to the original Death and recorded a second demo: "Reign of terror" and a year after the "Infernal death" demo. After these three demos Shuldiner decides to leave Florida and goes to San Francisco leaving the other two guyz who formed another band called Massacre. In '86 he recruits two new members: C.Reinfert and J.Hand, with them Death records their fourth and last demo: "Mutilation", finally this one gets the attention of the great independent label Combat and after signing up they release their debut, a big milestone in the scene: "Scream bloody gore" in '87. This record has been enourmosly influenced by "Seven Churches" and as its predecessor its a great and raw blast of thrash/death metal. After the release another change of line-up, two members leave and Chucky recruits T.Butler, B.Andrews and his old friend Rozz, with these guyz Death releases their second album, and by many considered their best: "Leprosy" in '88. A great album with a more complex songwrting and great lyrics, a class higer than before. Death kills on the stage due to the promoting of the album and after some gigs Rozz leaves definately the band, replaced by a virtuoso of the guitar J.Murphy, with him they record their last traditional raw Death metal attack: "Spiritual Healing" in '90. A record even more complex than the two previous but still classicly raw and brutal. During the tour of this album there is some serious arguing within the band and Chucky leaves the band for some time(during the tour!) He returns to change the totally line-up and record a new album. The new guys are: P.Masvidal, S.Reinert(from Cynic) and S.DiGiorgio(from Sadus) and the album called simply "Human" hits the stores in '91. This is still heavy and intense album, but alot more polished(the rawness of before is gone) though makes a great wall of sound(real heavy) and most of all alot more progressive which sets the new st |
